Established as a Hydro-Electric power generating town in the early 1900's, power generated at Waddamana, first supplied the lights of Hobart in 1911. Accessible from a mixture of good bitumen and gravel roads from either Bothwell in the South, or Poatina, if you are coming form the North, Waddamana is really the most central town in Tasmania.
Waddamana township, it's buildings and all, was sold to a private operator in 1992. Since that time Waddamana Field Study Centre has been developed into one of the most popular school camp facilities in the state. Expertly run by Frank and Helen Cooper, the camps feature bushwalks, wildlife study, fossil fossicking, fishing and history. The old Waddamana Power Station has become the official Hydro Power Museum, and is an intact record of the history of power generation in Tasmania. Frank and Helen specialize in rewarding school-camp experiences to classes from all over the state. With an extensive supply of teaching resources, even exciting pre-camp and post-camp classroom activities are available based on a range of over 100 worksheets developed exclusively by the Field study Centre, and available to teachers upon booking the camp.
